What are Dog Tag Silencers for?
Silencers are the elastic rings that fit around the edge of your dogtags. Their informal military purpose is to act as a 'bumper' to prevent the tags from clinking together to prevent noise in the field. Nowadays, with many colors to choose from, they are often just used for aesthetic purposes to suit your personal preferences. When where silencers first used?
Original Dogtag silencers were 'home-made' by innovative G.I.'s during WWII by cutting the hose rings from discarded gas-masks. These 'home-made' latex rubber rings stretched and fit perfectly around their issued ID Dogtags and prevented them from 'clinking' together. See our irreverent video on the History of Dogtag silencers and their origin during WWII.What is the official Dogtag Silencer?

What is Silicone Rubber (Dogtag Silencer)?
Silicone is a synthetic (man-made) rubber which is highly inert (doesn't react with most chemicals), is resistant to heat, and is hypoallergenic so it won't cause skin rashes. Silicone will eventually wear down over time and may tear, this is especially likely when used with pets like dogs as they are exposed to much more friction due to pet's activities.Cited from Silicone Silencers
What is PVC (Dogtag Silencer)?
Our medical grade PVC polymer silencer without latex is stronger than silicone but not as stretchy. These work better for pets or active people since they are much more durable. It is more difficult to put on the dogtag, however it will last longer and won't come off easily. What is Latex Rubber (Dogtag Silencer)?
Organic latex is a natural rubber which is stronger than silicone but not as stretchy. It will last longer and won't come off the dogtag as easily, but is also more difficult to put on. If you have an allergy to latex rubber DO NOT order these as it may cause a skin rash. These work better for pets since they are much more durable.Cited from Our Latex Rubber Silencers
Why do some Dog Tag sets not come with Silencers?
- Non Standard shape or size... because silencers are only available in one size for standard shaped dogtags (with the exception of the mini black silencer for our mini dogtags!)
- Notched dogtags... because notched dogtags are traditionally not worn with silencers. A silencer would cover the notch, thus defeating the aesthetic purpose of a notched tag.
- 2-Hole dogtags... because a silencer would cover one of the holes, thus defeating the purpose of a 2 hole dogtag.
- Shifted Text dogtags... because the text is shifted to the left (to fit more of it) a silencer would completely cover some of the letters.
Why do Silencers sometimes fall off the Dog Tags?
How can I make the silencer fit tighter on the Dog Tag?
Most silicone rubbers thicken when heated which causes them to shrink (before eventually melting). However there is a way to shrink the silicone rubber silencers without melting them. Peform at your own risk with caution as it involves boiling water and the potential for burns:
- Install (or keep) your silencers on your steel Dog Tags with chain attached (just as they would normally be worn).
- Boil a pot of water.
- Wearing oven mitts, hold the end of the ballchain and dip the Dog Tag with silencer fully into the boiling water for about 30 seconds.
- Then, dip the now hot Dog Tags with silencers into a bowl of ice-water for about 30 seconds.
- As it cools the silencers will shrink and conform to the shape of the Dog Tag! Repeat as necessary to cause further shrinking.

Silencers can be easily added or removed by stretching it around the Dog Tag. They may vary slightly from what is shown and may eventually tear, especially when used in a rough environment. Do not use silencers for pet collars since they may chew or swallow them.
